- Scenario 1 Action of Denmark Strait (24 May 41)
-
-
- Scenario File name: BISMARK
- Visibility: 17
-
- Ships: German British
- BB BISMARK BC HOOD
- CA PRINZ EUGEN BB PRINCE OF WALES
-
- Notes: The German battleship (BB) BISMARK, accompanied by the heavy
- cruiser (CA) PRINZ EUGEN steamed from Germany to attack British
- convoys. The British sighted the two ships and sent the battle
- cruiser (BC) HOOD and the battleship PRINCE OF WALES to sink the
- BISMARK or at least slow her down until additional ships could arrive
- to finish her off.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- German: Escape with the BISMARK to the south of the British
- ships. (Your goal is not to slug it out with British warships but to
- interdict merchant shipping.)
- British: Slow the BISMARK to 10 kts or less or destroy all of
- her forward and aft turrets.

-
-
- Scenario File name: GRAFSPEE
- Visibility: 24
-
- Ships: German British
- PB GRAF SPEE CA EXETER
- CL AJAX
- CL ACHILLES
-
- Notes: The pocket battleship (PB) GRAF SPEE had been successfully
- raiding merchant shipping when three British cruisers finally caught
- up with her.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- German: Escape from the British ships in any direction. Sinking
- all three cruisers is insufficient compensation for any serious damage
- sustained by your ship, whose mission is to sink enemy merchant ships.
- British: Sink or disable the GRAF SPEE, even if this requires
- the sacrifice of all of your ships. The GRAF SPEE is considered
- disabled if both her fore and aft turrets are destroyed or if she has
- been slowed to 10 knots or less.

- 4 SHIGURE (3 DD's) 3 PAUL JONES (4 DD's)
- 5 OSHIO (3 DD's)
-
- Notes: Hoping to impede the Japanese invasion of Java, a force of
- American, British, Dutch and Australian (ABDA) ships steamed from
- Surabaya to intercept and destroy an invasion convoy. The ABDA force
- spotted the JINTSU and eight destroyers, but without spotting aircraft
- they were unaware of the three other cruisers and ten destroyers
- lurking over the horizon. After a long battle, two allied destroyers
- were sunk and the remaining ships withdrew.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Sink or drive off all of the enemy ships in order to
- clear the way for your invasion force.
- ABDA: Break through to the northwest of the Japanese ships where
- the transports would be following (no actual transports are present in
- the scenario).

- DD YUKIKAZE DD VENUS
- DD VERULAM
- DD VIGILANT
- DD VIRAGO
-
- Notes: The Japanese Heavy Cruiser HAGURO was ordered to the Indian
- Ocean Andaman Islands to pick up a withdrawing garrison. She was
- spotted en route by aircraft and five British destroyers were sent to
- attack her. Using radar, the destroyers advanced on the HAGURO in a
- formation designed to trap her no matter which way she turned to
- escape. The HAGURO turned to fight rather than flee, but was hit by
- eight torpedoes and sunk.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Escape with the HAGURO in any direction (or sink all
- five enemy ships.)

- BB KIRISHIMA BB CALIFORNIA
- BB HARUNA BB TENNESSEE
- BB NAGATO BB COLORADO
- BB MUTSU BB MARYLAND
-
- Notes: Prior to the Second World War, naval planners drew up a number
- of contingency plans to deal with the possibility of a future conflict
- with each of the major sea powers. For a war with Japan, they
- envisioned the U.S. fleet sailing to the Philippines to destroy the
- Japanese fleet and rescue the Allied garrison there.
-
- This scenario simulates the possibility of such a slugfest, the type
- of battle these ships had been built to fight. When the aircraft
- carrier appeared on the scene, the battleships were given less
- glamorous tasks such as anti-aircraft screening and shore bombardment.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Drive off or sink all of the American ships in order
- to assure that the invasion of the Philippines will succeed.
- U.S.: Drive off or sink all of the Japanese ships and save the
- Philippines from invasion.

-
- Notes: As a result of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1921 which
- limited the number of battleships each of the participating countries
- could have, Japan scrapped a number of battleships that were currently
- under construction. This scenario is identical to the last except
- that four of these ships are assumed to have been completed and have
- been substituted for the four smaller KONGO class battleships.

- 4 H Class (3 DD's)
-
- Notes: Until early 1942, the SCHARNHORST, GNEISENAU and PRINZ EUGEN
- were based in the captured French port of Brest where the British
- subjected them to nearly around the clock bombing. On February 12,
- however, the Germans managed to sneak the warships out of port and up
- the English Channel toward Germany. By the time the British
- discovered this totally unexpected move, it was too late to make more
- than token attacks against them. This scenario assumes that a large
- naval force had been available to intercept
- the German ships.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- German: Break through to the northeast with the SCHARNHORST and
- GNEISENAU.

- BB GNEISENAU 1 H Class (3 DD's)
- 2 H Class (3 DD's)
- 3 H Class (3 DD's)
-
-
- Notes: While covering the German invasion of Norway in spring 1940,
- the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau encountered the British battlecruiser
- Renown. The German ships retreated after exchanging a few shots
- although it is likely they could have sunk the Renown.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- German: Sink the Renown without suffering severe damage to
- either of your ships.
- British: Score one or more hits on one of the enemy ships and
- then escape with the Renown in any direction.

-
-
- Scenario File name: MOROCCO
- Visibility: 24
-
- Ships: U.S. Axis (French)
- BB MASSACHUSETTS BB JEAN BART
- 3 AIGLE Class (3 DD's)
-
- Notes: Prior to the Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942,
- the USS MASSACHUSETTS engaged the French battleship JEAN BART (under
- Axis control) in a gunnery duel which silenced the Axis ship's guns
- and left her burning. The JEAN BART was anchored and still under
- construction at the time, and was not completed until 1955. In this
- scenario, the JEAN BART is assumed to have been completed early, and
- is more of a match for the U.S. battleship.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- U.S.: Sink the JEAN BART or destroy all of her turrets.
- Axis: Sink or drive off the MASSACHUSETTS.

-
-
- Scenario File name: ALASKA
- Visibility: 24
- Land: Guadalcanal, Savo Island, Florida Island
-
- Ships: U.S. Japanese
- (CA) ALASKA BB HARUNA
-
- Notes: The USS ALASKA was officially classified as a large heavy
- cruiser by the U.S. Navy, although her armor and armament were more
- like that of a battlecruiser. She is as capable a warship as the fast
- battleship HARUNA, as this scenario demonstrates.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- U.S.: Sink the HARUNA.
- Japanese: Sink the ALASKA. This is a difficult task in view of
- the ALASKA's superior speed and rate of fire. The Japanese player has
- won a minor victory if he escapes from the ALASKA before being
- crippled or sunk.)

-
- Notes: In response to the American landing at Guadalcanal, Admiral
- Mikawa ordered a force of cruisers to steam down the Solomon Island
- chain and attempt to break up the beachhead at night. The Japanese
- achieved total surprise and sank four cruisers without loss, but
- turned back without bombarding the transports or troops already
- ashore.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Break through to the 11 transports anchored to the
- southeast and sink as many as possible. The single ship 'TRANSPORTS'
- represents all of the transports.
- U.S.: Prevent the Japanese from sinking the transports.Because
- the Japanese attack was not expected, the U.S. player may not fire his
- guns or change the course or speed of any of his ships until after
- turn 3. After that, only ships that have been fired on may fire guns
- or maneuver until turn 15. (As a variant, assume no surprise and
- allow the U.S. player to respond immediately.)

-
- Notes: A Japanese squadron of cruisers under Admiral Goto steamed
- toward Guadalcanal where they were to bombard American positions.
- Unknown to Goto, Admiral Scott was waiting for him, eager to avenge
- the defeat at Savo Island. The trap was sprung that night when the
- HELENA's radar picked up the AOBA, enabling Scott to 'cross the T' and
- open fire on Goto's ships with his entire battle line. The Japanese
- were saved from total disaster when Scott ordered a cease-fire,
- concerned that he may have been firing on his own destroyers ahead of
- him. When the battle continued a few minutes later the Japanese,
- having had time to overcome their initial surprise, managed to badly
- damage the BOISE and two destroyers before escaping in the darkness.
- The Japanese lost both the FURUTAKA and the FUBUKI in their first
- defeat ever in a night battle.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Escape to the northwest, losing as few ships as
- possible. The Japanese player may not alter course or speed or fire
- any weapons until the third turn after being fired on or until an
- American ship comes within 3 miles of the AOBA.
- U.S.: Sink or cripple as many of the Japanese ships as possible.
- (To simulate the confusion described in the notes, 2 turns after the
- Japanese player is allowed to fire back, both sides should cease

-
- Notes: To clear the way for an amphibious landing, two battleships
- and their escorts were dispatched to bombard the U.S. airstrip on
- Guadalcanal. After scouting B-17's sighted the large force steaming
- down 'The Slot', Admiral Callaghan with his five cruisers and eight
- destroyers raced to intercept them. The two forces collided after
- midnight in one of the most furious sea battles ever fought. The
- Americans turned back the bombardment force, but the ATLANTA, JUNEAU,
- and four destroyers were sunk. The Japanese lost two destroyers, and
- the HIEI was badly damaged. She was easy prey for aircraft flying
- from the unmolested airfield and was sunk the next day.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Break through to the southeast of the American
- formation with at least one battleship with operational forward or aft
- turrets. This battleship would be able to destroy the airfield with
- its 14 inch guns.
- U.S.: Turn back or sink both of the enemy battleships in order

- Notes: Two days after the naval battle of November 12/13, Admiral
- Kondo again attempted to put Henderson airfield out of action. This
- time he was met by Admiral Willis Lee, with two battleships and a
- screen of four destroyers. The Japanese were again turned back,
- losing the KIRISHIMA and a destroyer. The Americans lost two
- destroyers, and suffered heavy damage to the SOUTH DAKOTA, which
- sustained a temporary power loss in the middle of the battle.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Break through to the southwest of the American ships
- with at least a battleship or two heavy cruisers.
- U.S.: Prevent the Japanese from slipping by to bombard the air
- field. To simulate the SOUTH DAKOTA's power outage at a critical
- stage in the battle, the SOUTH DAKOTA will be unable to fire any of

- Notes: Eight Japanese destroyers laden with supplies intended for the
- troops on Guadalcanal were intercepted and surprised by a superior
- force of cruisers led by Rear Admiral Wright. The U.S. ships opened
- fire at a range of 5 miles, but on this occasion their gunnery proved
- to be inaccurate and only one destroyer was sunk. As the Japanese
- ships turned to escape to the northwest, they fired torpedoes at the
- cruisers, sinking the NORTHAMPTON and damaging three others badly
- enough to keep them out of the war for a year.
-
- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Escape to the northwest with as many destroyers as

-
- Notes: Both Japan and the United States had plans to build monster

-
- Notes: In June of 1942 convoy PQ-17 departed for Murmansk loaded with
- 100 million dollars worth of aircraft, tanks, trucks and other
- military supplies badly needed by the Soviet Union. Along the way it
- was attacked by German aircraft and submarines, and it could have been
- intercepted by a strong surface force. False intelligence and the
- grounding of the Lutzow and 3 destroyers prevented the Germans from
- engaging with their heavy ships, but the aircraft and submarines sank
- all but 11 of the original 37 merchant ships in the convoy.
-
- Scenario Objectives:

- Scenario Objectives:
- Japanese: Escape with at least one Destroyer, sink an enemy ship,

-
- Variation: Historically, the Japanese did not detect the U.S. ships

- Notes: After receiving intelligence reports that British ships

- thought they were outnumbered and did not pursue the withdrawing

- Notes: One month after the aborted attack on Sardinia, the British

- a convoy to Malta. The Rodney and Prince of Wales had been brought

- Notes: Two months after the disastrous June 1942 effort to resupply
- Malta, the British staged another massive operation to attempt to get
- some supplies through. The Italians and Germans countered this effort
- with a gauntlet of submarines, torpedo boats, aircraft, and had
- planned to intercept surviving convoy units with six cruisers east of
- Malta. By the time the convoy reached Malta, it had been whittled
- down to 2 cruisers (one damaged), seven destroyers, and six merchant
